The Book is Real

Final Excess Baggage cover smallIt’s finally happening. The memoir of our family’s nomadic journey will be available in bookstores, online, and via e-readers on August 14, 2018. My book is called Excess Baggage:One Family’s Around-the-World Search for Balance. It took me over a year to write it, 6 months to find a publisher, another 6 months to edit, and these last few months to finalize the cover and interior design. But now it’s actually done. I can hold the galley proof in my hands and flip through all 313 pages of it. All 97,000 and some words. Pre-order sales have now opened on Amazon. The publicist is sending out advanced reader copies to media lists, I’m starting to schedule launch events…. this thing is actually happening. I wrote a whole damn book. :-)

It’s kind of surreal. When I started writing, it was something I was doing more for myself than for anyone else. As we landed in Colorado and settled in to our new “normal” life, I felt this burning desire to document the other side of the journey. My side of it. The personal growth and spiritual awakening I’d experienced as we traveled from country to country, meeting unique people and experiencing new places together. It was a story I hadn’t shared on this blog…or with anyone, for that matter. It was a journey from frazzled, overscheduled working mom to balanced, grateful citizen of the world. You won’t find a regurgitation of blog posts in this memoir. Instead, you’ll find the private side. The poignant moments that changed me forever. As one reviewer put it, “Excess Baggage is part Eat Pray Love and part National Lampoon’s Vacation.”

So, there you go. That’s my shameless plug. If you’d like to help me set up a book reading event in your town, reach out through the Contact page of my new web site, I’d love to come visit you, share a little of my story, and hear some of your stories, too. We all have an important story to share. We just have to take the time to sit and write it. :-)

About the Author

Mom, wife, friend and change agent traveling the world with my family to learn our place in it. After spending a career in organizational change management and community initiative implementation, I put my career on hold for our family's trip around the world. In April of 2014 we sold almost everything we own, put the rest in a storage container, and departed on this journey. While my husband continued his software development work to financially support our trip, I planned and documented our adventure, homeschooled our three daughters, and found volunteer work opportunities for us to do in the communities we visit. Now that we've returned to the U.S., I'm completing book about our family's adventure and our lessons learned.

  3. I heard you speak last year at the Indiana University Women’s Colloquium. Just couldn’t wait for the book to come
out almost a year later. I pre ordered the book on Amazon and haven’t been able to put it down! I can’t wait for my kids to
read it when I am finished. Two are IU grads and my daughter started her sophomore year this week.
