100 Volunteer Projects
Many of us have heard the starfish story. This adventure is our family’s version of it. We want to show our daughters how a bunch of little contributions can impact the world. Some of these volunteer projects will take just a couple hours, others may last a couple weeks or even months. Along the way we’ll learn a lot about the world, ourselves and how we want to shape our family life together.
We would love ideas and connections along the way. If you know a contact at a local service program or just want to tell us about some amazing place you think we should include on this journey, then contact us. We want to see how the global community might be able shape this experience. Want to check out our progress on this service work? Our list of projects is getting pretty long and very diverse.
The Starfish Story
A young man is walking along the beach and comes across an area in which thousands and thousands of starfish have been washed ashore. He sees an old man walking slowly along, and stooping down to pick up one starfish after another, tossing each one gently into the ocean.
“Why are you throwing the starfish into the ocean?” he asks the old man.
“Because the sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them further into the surf they will die.”
“But, old man, don’t you see how many there are? There are miles of beach where these starfish have washed up! You can’t possibly save them all or even a fraction of them. This is impossible. Your efforts won’t make any difference at all!”
The old man listened calmly and then stooped down to pick up another starfish, throwing it gently back into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”
